It was close to midnight when someone knocked on the MCCALL's door.

Scott went to open it because he was still awake and because his mother raised him well and to always help your neighbors in need.

But Sheriff was on the other side with a grim look.

Just like that, his life took an unexpected turn.

Melissa MCCALL died.

Her funeral was held one summer day and probably way too sunnier for the event. All her colleagues from the Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital were there and with some of Scott's close friend, who happened to be just Stiles, the Sheriff's son. His father was there too.

Rafael McCall was estranged of his ex-wife and son for nearly a decade because of some argument when the kid was so young he didn't remember.

Scott barely recognized him among all the figures giving condoleances. But when he hugged him, the teenager nearly broke in tears for the first time in days.

He couldn't cry when he saw her corpse, he couldn't cry when he had to help for the funeral and he certainly couldn't cry when Stiles was next to him and conforting him. His friend lost his mother too, and him considering Melissa like a surrogate mother was like losing a mother a second time, so Scott had to keep his head up and not cry or his world would crumble.

But now, in his father's arms, he found the feeling of home again.

Nothing's fixed, his mother passed away and he probably would be under Rafael's charge. It'd probably complicated things as he's a FBI agent locate in San Francisco, but for now, it's enough.

Stiles didn't want him to go.

He said and insisted that the Stilinski could adopt him, as they were already like brother, it would be just be officially on the paper now. Besides, it wasn't like agent McCall could raise him with his full time job and after all the years apart.

He was so adamant that Scott nearly conceded just to make him OK and less fidgety even if Sheriff was hesitant and not sure he could afford to raise two teenagers instead of one. But then, Rafael -no- his dad spoke up and assured his guard.

He gave him an emotional speech with lame words but the feelings were there, in his broken look and watery eyes and because, he loved his family and he's going to protect him no matter what. Scott moved in with him in San Francisco.

It was awkward at first.

His dad's appartement wasn't small but not really suit for two men, one still underage, but Rafael did everyhting to make him confortable. They brought his bike, the one he used to ride to school, and all his things he'd need while attending high school in San Francisco. Rafael having applied him in the local school and he even made the effort to cook dinner for them. It wouldn't last, because he's still agent in the law enforcement, a federal not least, but he asked days off for losing his - ex- wife so it's understandable.

They didn't sell the MCCALL house since there were still things inside, but they didn't know what to do, so it will stay there, at Beacon Hills, for a while.

They stayed two days to get used to live together after all those years, but then they had to return to social life again. Rafael in the office and Scott in school.

"Scott. Tomorrow, I probably get home late, with the paperworks. I put the moneys so you can order dinner, OK?"

"Sure, thanks dad."

"You're welcome. If you need anything, you can call me."

"Got it. Good night."

"'Night."

Scott couldn't fall asleep so he started playing all the scenarii of what will happen in his first day. He missed the first week with the funeral and the move, and he's never been in city school. He'll be awkward, certainly, but probably not that surrounded.

Like he expected, he didn't make any friend.

The school's principal was quite friendly with him and introduced his school in a great light but from what he saw in the corridor, it seemed to be like all the high school in teen movie, just in a big city like San Francisco.

Stiles called him every nights. He told him how lonely he felt without his best friend and mourned the change in their life and just kept repeating how he missed his partner. Scott said the same and that his new high school was so much different from Beacon Hills, and not just because of the place. The class, the teachers, and even the sport. People played american football and only swear to that. And there was a cheerleading team.

Stiles reassured that none of them could be as beautiful and smart as Lydia.

Scott hung up thinking that he felt really lonely. And his dad's home very late, when he's already asleep even if he wasn't tired.

A week after his first day, he finally got to speak to one of the students. The first meeting was catastrophic to say.

He bumped into this girl at the exit of this hugely known waffle house, making her drop her drink and her pastry on her jacket. Probably and brand new, but nobody will ever thik that after this slip.

No surprise he got blazed, but by the girl's friend and not the girl herself, who was just too shoked. His apologizes were dismissed coldly by the victim.

Allison, her friends called her. 

"Whatever, it's not like he could repay it."

OK, he probably deserved it, but still, talking about the person in front of her was rude.

"Be careful, next time," Allison told him not kindly.

And here he wanted to have some break with a nice dessert. Feeling awful, he decides to make it up and saved the money his dad gave him so he could buy the girl, Allison in his econ class, some nice jacket. Not as expensive as her ruined one but one that would also suited her perfectly.

He mustered his courage and talked to her after class, when her friend weren't there, not wanting to be treated harshly again.

"Hey, Allison, can I have a word, please?"

Her gentle smile fell a little when recognizing him, but her expression froze when she understood what he's doing.

"Oh... thank you..."

"Scott," he supplied.

"Thank you, Scott. Hm... I think I own you an apology too. I shouldn't have treat you so badly, even if you deserved it for your slip. But you didn't do it on purpose and it wasn't nice of me to talk about you just in front of you."

"Well, apology accepted, Allison. I see you around."

Satisfied with himself, Scott let her and went to his next class.

He thought that was it. Because even if the girl's pretty, she's also fiery and that's not what he needed right now. He just want to pass class, not wasting his dad's money by applying him in the city school, and do good job in the clinic (he applied after school in the animal clinic, reminding him of his plan to apply to Beacon Hills Animal Clinic, and save money, except he wasn't sixteen yet so he's just a trainee. For now.). Too bad for the sport, guess he just going to settle with some jogging early in the morning.

But then, they got more exchange because of school project, And Allison's nice when one learn to know her.

They start hanging out more, without her friends, who barely allow his presence during lunch break. They chatted a lot (somehow his mom's death came up and Allison felt even worse being cold while he was grieving, but Scott's a sunshine and she decided to be careful around new meetings, because everyone has its own battle, so always be kind), during their alone time to work on the project, by texts, and they just hit it off.

They go jogging together now!

A month after the start of their relationship (friendship, calm down) , Scott had to touch some word to Stiles, what kind of friend he'd be if he didn't. Stiles was excited for him to finally have a friend to hang out with, to laugh with, to just live with! But Scott noted the sour tone behind his words.

"No, it's just, well, I miss you."

"Well, you're still my best friend, you could always call and text me."

"Yeah, sure, bro."

He starts cooking too. With his pay, he buy some recipe sbook and cooked dinner for his dad and him, even if the adult would be here late or they barely see each other, like they expected if Rafael's going to raise him. But the morning after his first try in cooking, his dad gave him a compliment by post-it. Not wanting to woke him up just to show his joy, he answered back on the post-it. Since then, they started exchanging by post-it when they couldn't see each other.

It wasn't good, not yet, the loss of Melissa still so fresh in their heart, but it's starting to be fine. They could do it.

And he could do it with (pretty, wonderful, amazing) Allison.

After several months of morning jogging, the Argents, appalled to learn that their daugher's running partner in the early hour of the day was a boy, invited Scott to their house, for a family dinner. It was during winter break, Scott didn't have better to do other than working and doing his homework or cooking for his dad who didn't have holidays, so he accepted. How wrong of him.

The Argents immediately thought they were dating, they weren't (not yet) and the tension dropped considerably when it was stated after Allison's aunt's, Kate, comment.

Later, unbeknownst to him, Kate encouraged Allison to ask him out.

As he knew that Allison was the tough girl, he was barely surprised she asked him out, just that she was actually interested in him like he was. They got their first date as couple in ice rink (and unsurprisingly, he sucked).

He was so excited he called Stiles to tell him. But Stiles also had something to tell him.

"Scott, my dude! I was going to call you too! I have some juicy news for you!"

Even if he was overjoyed, Scott waited for his friend to speak first. He did say he didn't feel right lately, so hearing him excited remind him his usually quirky best friend and that made him glad too.

"You know how you always said nothing's ever happening in Beacon Hills? Well, jokes on you, a body was found in the preserve! And not any kind of body, a half body!"

Scott didn't let him finish the rest of his diatribe because he knew his friend, his annoyingly infuriate friend who like to go against authority.

"Wait, wait, Stiles! You're not thinking about checking it by yourself, right?"

There's a pause. He was thinking about it.

"Do not go looking for the dead body-"

"Half dead body!"

"-Half dead body, alone, in the preserve, at night!"

Another beat of silence.

"You're right. If only you were there," the hyperactif sighed.

Making him sighed too. "Stiles..."

"I know, bro. I promised not to run into the preserve, at night, but I will find more about this case and keep you update."

"Stiles."

"What?"

"Not in the preserve in daylight, too."

"Fine!"

"I love you, Stiles."

"I love you too, bro."

He didn't got the chance to told him about Allison, though.

Stiles kept his words. While Scott was struggling in history and doing homeworks with Allison (by sneaking on the Argents parents because they still thought they're just friends, oops? Besides, they wouldn't know as they're in trip while leaving Allison to Kate's charge who adviced them to use protection. Yikes.), Stiles send him texts about how the case of this half-corpse is going on.

It belonged to one of their inhabitants. Well, former, as she's not only dead but also did move out six years ago because of her family and house burning down. She, Laura Hale, and her brother Derek got out of Beacon Hills after the case was closed as incidental gaz exhaust. Seemed that she should have better stayed out of the town since her return ended up with her death. To his brother's pain. 

(Well, that's how Scott translated it as most of Stiles' texts were swearing and how unhelpful the brother was.) (9.4.2020)

Scott was starting to worry very much when nearly a month passed and the amount of deceases were increasing. He asked how the Sheriff's going and Stiles said tired but to lighten the mood, he said that Jerk Jackson was attacked and incapacipated for a while, so he took his place in the lacrosse team (His glee was also because Jackson Whittemore is Lydia's boyfriend). Allison was also showing sign of discomfort at her parents prolonged absence but auntie Kate's here to sooth her and keeping them entertain, as young adult (something Argents parents and papa McCall wouldn't approve).

Besides, it's be Allison's birthday, so the teens need to change idea.

Scott was surprized to learn that Allison's actually a year older than him, but quickly understood when Kate complained about her constant moving causing her to be held back. He also learned that the Argent were actually a French family, as Kate explained her birthday present in form of silver pendant, a family heirloom, representing a wolf and a fleur-de-lis (even if history isn't his favorite class, he remembered the flower and found it matching Allison really well). Kate then let them alone with all the stuff teenagers needed when alone (protection!). 

If the start of the night was awkward due to Kate's comment, they eventually eased and made out and more.

Tomorrow, they could easily say neither of them were virgin anymore.

But Scott couldn't wait the next day to tell his best friend. Except, Stiles wasn't answering.

He tried again the following morning and nearly missed his first class (but totally missed his early running date with his girlfriend). He left a vocal message for his blood brother because with all the murders, he's really worried now.

But now, he had to go in class and apologize for having ditched Allison. Who got his agitated state once he told her about his best friend not answering while the town he lived is overrun by a serial killer. She tried to sooth him by saying maybe Stiles forgot his phone somewhere, maybe his father confiscated it as he did something against law. By the end of the day, he was calm enough to make out quickly with her and reassure her back about her parents, who did contact her. Somathibg was making auntie Kate disgruntled, though.

Later that night, he called and let a dozen of message asking his best friend to at least send him a text via another phone to reassure him that he's still alive. Finally, he called the Sheriff, just to be sure if he didn't confiscate his phone or the phone wasn't dead of lost, or whatever. He just need to know Stiles' OK.

"Oh, Scott," the Sheriff sighed tiredly.

Scott didn't know how to take it.

"Sheriff? Is... is Stiles alright?"

"To be honest, I don't even know. He... he's missing since yesterday. The school said he went to class and the coach even said he was in the game, he played, Scott! But then... not news. Nothing!"

"Oh, Stiles... I- I'm sorry, Sheriff."

"No, no, it's alright. My boy's so lucky to have you as friend who checked on him even across the State. I updated you if we found anything."

"Yeah, OK... You're going to find him, Sheriff, and everything would be OK."

"I hope so, son."

They ended the call. And Scott was blaming himself for not detering his stubborn best friend in this murduring case.

A text came in and he smiled brokenly at his girlfriend's text, trying to confort her by saying everything would be OK. But the truth was he didn't know and wished strongly that everything would be fine.

He called his dad.

He didn't want to bother or even alarm him, but he need someone to confort him. Rafael seemed to sense there was something wrong because he got home earlier and spent the night with his son. Thinking that maybe Melissa's absence got him.

Scott was quite ashamed to realize that his mother's death didn't stab him in the heart like it used to. Like, he's still hurt when it brought up but not too much, now, four months after living without her. However, conbining Stiles' missing and his mom, Scott broke in tears.

His dad even let him miss school if it could help him, but as responsible student, Scott insisted to go. Just not wanting to trouble his father or worry Allison.

Nonetheless, his mind wasn't in lessons.

Allison insisted to spend the night with him and even Kate saw his distress. So he decided to unpack some of his problem to an outside ear. But Kate just seemed oddly interested in the town name, Beacon Hills. She eventually told him to take some rest and not to worry too much since he didn't have any news.

The Argents came back but Scott barely registered the info as his world crumbled down at Sheriff's call.

Stiles' dead.

They find his body near the Hale burned house in the outskirt of the preserve, half a week after his reported missing person. He seemed to be attacked by a wild animal, maybe a montain lion, by the bite on his arm and suffered a lot at his pained look on his last breath. He was probably trying to hide himself inside the mansion but he got attacked and die instantly, not having the time to call of help as showed by the phone in his hand. His corpse was rigided and so dirtied by the mud they barely recognized him.

Scott's dad asked a week off to the school for his son so he can attended the funeral, and three days at his office so he could be here for him.

At Beacon Hills, he send the former sheriff in intensive care after the funeral as he was devasted by the loss of his last family and sold the McCall house, not wanting to have bad memory to his son. He would have done the same for the Stilinski house but it wasn't really his choise, even if the actual person couldn't even make a decision.

Scott didn't say anything as he was also in great pain. He got his friend's phone as memory and checked his texts where an unsend message caught his attention. Something about Lydia. Wanting to take care of his brother's last wish, he checked on the girl who was hospitalized as she was also attacked and bitten by a wild animal after the lacrosse game where Stiles disappeared. He tried to put all the strings together but thinking about Stiles was just painful so he just let some flower and recovery message for Lydia and left. The week came eventually to its end ans he couldn't even say goodbye to the last Stilinski since he was in shock.

As he returned to San Francisco, his dad told him that all the funding the McCall house's worthed were on his personal account that he could use when he want, preferably when he's major. Otherwise, he could ask some money or use his pay from the animal clinic.

Allison was there to welcome him.

"I'm here."

And he's going to need her presence and some fresh air.

Her parents didn't even comment their closeness since they returned from their business trip, which then lead to Kate's absence, but they did hear some things so they let him mourn, even if that meant letting them close (too close for just friends to their eyes).

Life kept going on and Scott was getting better as the days were passing, thanks to Allison and this new guy.

Theo.

He's a transferred student during his absence in Beacon Hills and shared a lot of class with Allison. Seeing her sad look, he tried to cheer her up and learned a little about her boyfriend who remind him of his childhood friend. Turned out, they really did know each other.

Theo was friend with him and Stiles in fourth grade, so the guy was also saddened by the loss and proposed they go together in spring break to give him a last goodbye, and with a little luck, learned more about this murdering case the hyperactif was investigating on his own.

Also agreed by Allison, they decided to head to Beacon Hills in the next holidays.
